CHEVROLET MALIBU, PONTIAC G6, SATURN AURA RECALLED

By Stephen Elmer, Autoblog.com - A recall has been issued today for model Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles built between 2008 and 2010, as well as Saturn Auras built from 2007 to 2010 because of a transmission flaw.

About 40,029 vehicles are affected by the recall which has only been reported in Canada so far, although it will surely spread to the U.S. soon.  When NHTSA announces it, expect the number of vehicles affected to be much higher as well.

The problem affects automatic transmission vehicles where shift cable locking tabs can fracture, causing the shift lever to show an incorrect gear than what the vehicle is actually in.  This means that the driver can place the shift lever in park, but the vehicles transmission may not follow suit, which could lead to the car rolling away once the driver has exited.  Because the car doesn't know when it is in park, it will not automatically lock the doors, and it may be incapable of restarting.

Dealers will replace the cable, and/or the cable clips free of charge to the consumer.

UPDATE:  The recall has now expanded to the States according to NHTSA, where it affects 426,240 vehicles in total.
