CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 JOINS DRAG STRIP '11-SECOND CLUB'

By Chris Woodyard, USA Today - Though we've always been impressed with members of the "Mile High Club", Chevrolet says its membership based on its engineering prowess is remarkable nonetheless. The team ran a stock Camaro ZL1 with an automatic transmission over the quarter mile in 11.93 seconds, hitting 116 miles per hour. A Camaro ZL1 with stick shift ran the same distance in 11.96-seconds.

GM says not only could the ZL1 ace the quarter mile, but it could rocket from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds. And it can do so with street-legal components.

"The ZL1 is great at everything and we're very proud of that," said Tony Roma, Camaro ZL1 program engineering manager. "You can take it to the drag strip and run 11-second quarter-miles all day long. You can also take it to a road course, where it's balanced, handles well, and does exactly what you want."

The new ZL1 is a throwback to a special-order 1969 Camaro ZL1 that was renowned for its performance on the drag strip.
