WHAT IMPACT WILL HURRICANE SANDY HAVE ON CAR PRODUCTION?

By George Kennedy, Autoblog - On Monday, with Hurricane Sandy fast approaching, Wards Auto published a report speculating on how the storm might effect the auto industry.  In a general sense, it was predicted that plants in or near the storm's path could shut down as a precautionary measure.  With Sandy now having made landfall as a superstorm, it appears several production facilities were right in her path.

Two plants in Maryland that most certainly ceased production during the storm were a General Motors powertrain facility that builds heavy duty truck and SUV transmissions, while the other is a Volvo plant that produces Volvo and Mack truck engines.  The Swedish concern also has a Mack truck plant in Pennsylvania which is currently experiencing heavy rain and flooding.

Plants located in Virginia and West Virginia are currently being blanketed by heavy snows and more than 128,000 homes are without power.  A blizzard warning has been issued in West Virginia, Ohio and Michigan, both home to many automotive production facilities, are also in the midst of heavy snow and rain.  It will be unclear just how extensive the effect is on automotive production until the storm and its aftereffects have passed.

Depending on Sandy's path, plants in Ontario, Canada and upstate New York could still be effected, though it is suspected the largest hit on the auto industry could be a drop in sales.  The Wards Auto report suggests that October's industry sales could be 200,000 to 300,000 units less than expectations.  With the storm still making its way through the Appalachian region and much of the Northeast, only time will tell the true effect on the auto industry.

2012 CHEVROLET COPO CAMARO CONVERTIBLE IS AN INFERNO ORANGE CHARITABLE DONATION

By Jeremy Korzeniewski, Autoblog - Interested in getting your hands on an extremely limited edition Camaro?  You're in luck.

Chevrolet is using the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas to pull the wraps off its very last 2012 COPO Camaro.  Car number 69 of 69 is a convertible, and just the second topless COPO created.  Thing is, the first COPO convertible is sitting pretty in a General Motors museum and it ain't for sale.

One of 20 built with a 327-cubic-inch V8 plus 4.0-litre supercharger, this Inferno Orange Metallic (the only 2012 COPO in this hue) machine sends an NHRA-certified output of 550 horsepower to the rear wheels (connected by a solid rear axle for drag racing use) through a beefy three-speed Turbo 400 automatic transmission.  Needless to say, it'll be very fast in a straight line.

Want this one-of-one Camaro for your own garage?  Get your bidding number ready -- this car will be auctioned off at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January, with benefits going to the American Heart Association.

Alternatively, you could wait until 2013, as Chevy has announced plans for another run of 69 COPO Camaro models in 2013.  Or, you could grab hold of Chevrolet's so-called 2013 Build Book and order all the parts to put one together yourself.

CHEVY MALIBU TURBO PERFORMANCE CONCEPT IS HOTTED UP FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

By Autoblog - One of the greatest aspects of the SEMA show is the freedom it gives automakers and tuners to play around a little.  Where other shows' bread and butter are more serious conceptual pieces or production-bound unveils, cars at SEMA are very often flights of fancy that are really only intended to bring some excitement to a model or brand.

Case in point is Chevrolet's Malibu Turbo Performance Concept, which, while not offering added performance over the standard 2.0L turbo's 259 horsepower, does look a lot more interesting than the standard model.  A super-aggressive ground effects package, concept-specific blue paint, unique badges, dashes of red accent work and a lot of what's called "black-ice tinted chrome" all help to make this a Malibu that you won't forget.

CHEVY EQUINOX AND GMC TERRAIN TWINS HIT 1M UNITS

By Autoblog - The GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox twins have been hot sellers since they went on sale in 2009, but even with strong sales, it's still somewhat surprising to hear that the millionth crossover underpinned by the latest Theta platform has already rolled off the assembly line.  According to General Motors, a silver 2013 GMC Terrain has just become the milestone model at its CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.

Both Chevrolet and GMC models are still selling well.  Through September of this year, each line has seen double-digit percentage increases over 2011, and a new, more powerful V6 added to the lineup should help to sell a few more units each month.  On their current pace, the Equinox is likely to sell just over 200,000 units in 2012 (compared to 149,979 units just two years ago) while the Terrain should have no problem topping 90,000 units for the year (up from 60,519 units in 2010).

Demand has been so high for the platform mates over the last several years that production capacity has been added in Oshawa, Ontario and more recently, Spring Hill, Tennessee.

CHEVY MULLS KILLING 'RUNS DEEP' TAG LINE, EXEC SAYS

By Mark Rechtin, Automotive News - Chevrolet is pondering ending the use of its "Chevy Runs Deep" advertising tag line.

"It is in play," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing.  "We might transition."

The fate of the tagline has been in limbo since reports emerged this past spring.  A decision has been expected this past summer, Automotive News reported in April.

With the upcoming "13 in '13" promotion that involves a swath of new U.S. vehicles in the next 15 months, as well as the expansion of the Chevrolet brand in other markets, Chevy is pondering whether the current tag line "plays a role here and globally," Perry said.

He confirmed that study teams have been created at Chevrolet and its advertising agencies to evaluate new tag lines.  However, changing the tag line is not a fait accompli, Perry cautioned.

"I have nothing to announce right now," he said in an interview on the sidelines of the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association show here.

He added:  "We want it to be a rallying cry for dealers, owners and (our employees) that is translatable around the world.  I"m not saying we'd use the same American phrase around the world, just something where the meaning translates."

The fate of Chevrolet advertising has been in turmoil for most of this year.

In March, Chevrolet handed global marketing responsibilities to new agency Commonwealth, a 50-50 joint venture, combining San Francisco's Goodby, Silverstein & partners, an Omnicom Group company, and New York's McCann Erickson Worldwide, an Interpublic Group company.

In July, GM fired Joel Ewanick as chief marketing officer after disagreements over the vetting of a $559 million Chevrolet sponsorship deal with English soccer clob Manchester United.

DRIVE ON: GUY FIERI HYPES A COOKIN' CHEVROLET CORVETTE

By Chris Woodyard, USA Today - Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, shows off his "cooked up" Chevrolet Corvette C6 special edition during the Chevrolet Media Reception at the SEMA convention in Las Vegas.

When it comes to finding a celebrity to help out in a pinch, General Motors is increasingly calling on Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives on the Food Channel.

The blonde, spiky-haired, wisecracking Fieri showed up this week in Las Vegas, where he showed off the "cooked up" Chevrolet Corvette C6 special edition.  He was there as a kickoff for the SEMA trade show, the big aftermarket parts show for the auto industry.

The Corvette will be auctioned off for charity in January.

Fieri loves cars in general and the vintage Chevrolet Camaro he drives on his TV show in particular.  He showed up before to help out GM last summer to pace the Indianapolis 500 in a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.  And he brought two of his personal Camaros to Detroit in August for the Woodward Dream Cruise, the annual festival of vintage cars that rolls down one of the Motor City's major boulevards.

Fieri isn't all about Chevrolets.  Drive On readers will remember the trauma he suffered a year ago when his Lamborghini was stolen from a San Francisco dealership.  It disappeared for months before recovered from a Marin County storage facility.

HOT WHEELS, LIFE-SIZE

Chevrolet is offering up a life-size Hot Wheels car in its limited
edition Camaro, introduced at a trade show in Las Vegas on Monday.
This special edition will be available in Canada, the U.S.,
Mexico, Japan, Korea, Europe and the Middle East.
By Aly Thomson, The Canadian Press - An automaker and toy company have teamed up to unleash the inner child in muscle-car-loving adults.

Chevrolet is offering up a life-size Hot Wheels car in its new limited edition Camaro, introduced at a trade show in Las Vegas on Monday.

As part of a $6,995 US upgrade package, the beaming metallic blue car combines the high performance of the Camaro ZL1 with some recognizable mainstays of Hot Wheels dinky cars, including redlined wheels, a thick matte black stripe on its hood and flame graphics, a news release said.

The car -- available with V6 and V8 engines in coupe or convertible -- also features 21-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and black leather interior equipped with red embroidery.

And of course, the famous Hot Wheels logo is brandished throughout the vehicle, including on its front seats, body and grill.

"For it to appeal to the guys who have grown up with the brand of Hot Wheels, it needed to be a little bit flashy," Felix Holst, vice-president of design for Hot Wheels, said from Las Vegas on Monday.

"The designers at (General Motors) really did a phenomenal job of capturing the flare and the excitement that a Hot Wheels car should have in it ...

"The car oozes Hot Wheels performance and attitude and makes a very, very cool statement."

The project which started two years ago, fulfilled many childhood dreams, said Dave Ross, Chevy's design lead for specialty cars.

"The designers really connected to it based on the fact that most of us played with Hot Wheels when we were kids," Ross said from Las Vegas.

"Anybody that's a car guy, anbody that's a Hot Wheels fan, anybody that's a Camaro fan is going to flip out over this car."

The company said the car will only be produced in the first quarter of 2013 and dealers will start taking orders on Thursday.  For Canadian orders, the car will be produced at a factory in Oshawa.

It's not the first time Chevrolet has offered a playful upgrade.

Both the 2010 and 2012 Camaro featured an option for a bright-yellow-clad version of the vehicle made famous by the Autobot Bumblebee in the Hollywood blockbuster Transformers.

The special edition Hot Wheels Camaro will be available in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Japan, Korea, Europe and the Middle East.

The Camaro was one of the original 16 Hot Wheels cars produced in 1968, and remains one of the most valuable of the company's toys among collectors, a news release said.

CHEVROLET TRIES DELUXE VERSION OF TINY SONIC CAR

Chevrolet Sonic Dusk sedan will start
production and be available in 2014
By Chris Woodyard, USA Today - "Sophistication and refinement" and "small car" don't usually go together, but Chevrolet is out to change that today with the announcement that it's going to produce a luxe edition of its Sonic subcompact.

What's next?  The Gucci edition?

Chevrolet is going to unveil the model next week at the SEMA aftermarket products show in Las Vegas.

The new model will be called the Sonic Dusk sedan.  Outside, the car will have a body ground effects package, a rear spoiler and large, 18-inch aluminum wheels.  The devil is in the details, where Dusk will have touches such as door handle inserts and a rear license plate frame in a matte finish.

The interior will feature black leather-trimmed seats with suede accents and tan inserts.  Mojave accent stitching and tan-color door panel and instrument panel accents were designed to enhance the cabin's ambience, Chevy says.

It's an interesting gambit.  Buyers of small cars such as the Sonic usually are trying to spend as little as possible, so they refrain for adding a lot of extras to cars.  But Ford, among others, is showing with its Focus that a new buyer is out there who wants small and economical without giving up a lot of the comforts and small luxuries of larger cars.

"Just like we've done with Corvettes and Camaros, we're taking another one of our core products and adapting it to our customers' lifestyles," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, in a statement.  "The reaction to the Sonic Dusk concept last year was overwhelmingly positive and proved customers are interested in a more-refined subcompact.  We're moving quickly to bring Sonic Dusk to Chevrolet showrooms."

As are other Sonics, the car is equipped with an Ecotec turbocharged 1.4-liter engine rated at 138 horsepower.  It comes with either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission.

CHEVY REFUSES TO PAY BONUSES TO DEALER WITH BASS PRO SHOPS-

By Chris Tutor, Autoblog - Avid duck hunter Marc Heitz knows ducks would rather land on a pond already populated by ducks.  Heitz is also a Chevy dealer, and when it came time to build a new facility, he figured car shoppers were a lot like ducks.

"When people see other people on our lot, they're comfortable stopping," Heitz tells Automotive News.

The best way to attract people to his lot, he theorized, was to give them reasons beyond cars and trucks.  His Norman, OK showroom has a 13.7-metre (45-foot) waterfall, an aquarium stocked with local fish species and animal tracks on the floor lead to an arcade for the kids.

Outside the log-cabin-like dealership are bear and elk statues, a picnic area and two dog parks.  It feels more Bass Pro Shops than car dealer.

General Motors agrees that it's certainly not your average Chevrolet dealership.  And because the Heitz building doesn't have Chevy's signature blue cladding and gold bowtie, GM says it will not pay Heitz his US$250,000 quarterly dealer-excellence incentive.  A GM spokesman said the company will be glad to reinstate the payments if only Heitz will modify the building to be in compliance with the corporate branding plan, including removing the animal footprints.

"It would be like putting socks on a rooster," Heitz tells AN.  And it looks like Heitz is no fan of footware for fowl.  He said he doesn't understand why GM wants to mess with something that's working (his dealership sold 1,900 vehicles in 2011), and he has no plans to change anything.  Even if it costs him around $1 million a year.  Maybe that's what "Chevy runs deep" means?

A DEEPER LOOK AT THE SMALL-BLOCK HEART OF THE 2014 CORVETTE

By Chris Paukert, Autoblog.com - If it's never been said before that the cornerstone to General Motors performance is the small block V8, well, it ought to be on a factory plaque somewhere.  And maybe some t-shirts.  We can start printing up the latter right now:  The General's evergreen performance linchpin is getting a 21st-century makeover in the form of this all-new 6.2-litre LT1.

Revealed this morning at GM's Powertrain Development Center in Pontiac, Michigan, the new small block will be at the heart of the 2014 C7 Chevrolet Corvette, and variants are also expected to find their way into other GM vehicles in short order, including the automakers' full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups (which are also on schedule for new 2014 models).

We revealed the key specs as the press conference unfurled this morning; a minimum of 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in under four seconds for the base Corvette and around 8.7L/100km (27 mpg).  Critically, despite being a large displacement engine, the fifth-generation small block stays true to its roots with a compact footprint -- GM claims the engine is four inches lower and more compact overall than BMW's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, yet it weighs 40 pounds (18 kg) less.

Key new technologies for the engine include direct injection and continuously variable valve timing, along with Active Fuel Management, a technology that GM tried to input on the last Corvette but officials admitted they had to scuttle the tech due to refinement issues -- problems have been solved now.  All that new hardware means that the LT1 is actually slightly heavier than the outgoing LS3 V8, but it's still very lightweight.  Traditionalists will appreciate that the cam-in-block pushrod engine keeps the bore spacing and block length of its predecessors, but make no mistake, this is an all-new engine -- the sum total of the carryover parts fit comfortably inside a small Ziplock baggie.

While GM officials wouldn't disclose further details about the upcoming C7's powertrain (transmission, etc), they did opaquely confirm that an active exhaust system will return.  Engine and exhaust sound is a key part of delivering the V8 experience, and engineers say they've worked hard to ensure that the Corvette's auditory thunder continues.  When Autoblog noted that the inclusion of direct-injection can bring along with it some unpleasant engine sound ramifications, the engineering team noted that burying some of the hardware in the engine valley (under the intake manifold and blanketed by acoustic foam) has removed much of the unpleasant DI pump clatter at idle as well as under load.  (Officials gleefully noted that the DI tech is so buried in the vee that cutaway artist extraordinaire David Kimble had a hard time locating the hardware to render it in his artwork!)

While previous speculation had the new small block pegged at 5.5-litres, GM says they went with a larger 6.2-litre displacement because of the advantages of cylinder deactivation, which effectively has the LT1 operating as a 3.1-litre V4 under lighter loads.  If GM had made the engine's displacement smaller, the V4 mode wouldn't have provided as much power, and thus drivers wouldn't have the engine operating in cylinder deactivation mode as often in daily driving.  By operating in full-on V8 mode more often, GM would have negated the efficiency benefits of going with a smaller displacement.

It was just about a year ago, at the end of November, 2011 when GM announced it had built its 100-millionth small block.  And while GM wisely doesn't anticipate building another 100 million, this new LT1 shows that there's a lot of life left in V8 engines -- certainly enough for millions more.

CHEVY TEASES 2014 SILVERADO, WILL DEBUT DECEMBER 13

By Steven J. Ewing, Autoblog - Good news everyone -- the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado will, in fact, have headlights.  And projector beam ones, at that.  Chevrolet has chosen to release this specific teaser image of its next-gen pickup truck to "showcase the careful attention given to every detail."

We already knew that General Motors was planning to debut its new Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups at the Detroit Auto Show in January, but the automaker has now confirmed that the trucks will meet the world at a special event on December 13.

Aside from these new headlamps, the only other for-sure detail that we know about the new Silverado is that it will be powered by GM's new small-block V8 -- an engine that we'll be seeing for the first time in just a few days.  Rumours have suggested that smaller V6 engines will be on tap, as well, including a possible turbocharged unit to compete with the hot-selling 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine in the Ford F-150.

Rest assured, we'll be on hand at GM's event in December to bring you the full skinny on the new Silverado and its GMC Sierra twin.

ESCAPE IN THE 2013 MALIBU

By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media - To be a mid-sized sedan in this day and age means that you actually have to be a lot more than just a mid-sized sedan.

You have to have a super-attractive entry price.  You also have to show that you like clean air, trees and fluffy rabbits romping in fields.  And, you have to be sporty enough for moms and dads who gave up their two-door cars when the stork came calling.  But, since you can't really put all of that together in one car, the Malibu -- and others in this class -- have separate models to take care of a broad buyer base.

Once considered somewhat plain and uninspiring in a rental-fleet sort of way, the Malibu regained its groove for the 2008 model year with sharp styling, thoughtfully designed interior appointments and competent road manners.  The reviews bordered on gushing, sales spiked and the mid-size Chevy was walking proud again.  The new 2013 Malibu has been repurposed for new challenges and increased sedan-class competitiveness.  From top to bottom it's a completely different car, starting with a more rigid platform based on the Opel Insignia (also part of GM).

Exterior dimensions are closely aligned with the out-going Malibu, except for about 11.5 centimetres of shrinkage between the front and rear wheels.  Despite this deficit, most key passenger- and cargo-area measurements, except legroom, have actually increased.  The speedometer and tachometer gauge pods are located in what are clearly Chevrolet Camaro-inspired housings.  As with other recently launched GM sedans, the Malibu comes with 10 standard airbags, including front-knee inflatables.

In short, the 2013 Malibu offers a variety of models to a diverse group of buyers.  Welcome to the modern mid-size sedan.

For buyers with a green streak, the Malibu Eco features a 182-horse 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a special 15-horsepower electric motor/generator that adds "eAssist" via a belt drive during acceleration and passing.  Called a "mild hybrid" because the Malibu Eco cannot run on electric power alone.

CHEVY TO SHOW SS IN VEGAS IN RACE TRIM

By George Kennedy, Autoblog.com - A lot of speculation has been made with regards to the SS, the promised new Chevrolet rear-wheel drive performance sedan.  The Holden Commodore-based muscle saloon will be prowling the open road as early as next year, while a NASCAR version is set to compete in 2013.  Shots of the cars testing in their respective natural habitats have led to endless speculation, and it appears we now know which car will debut first.

Word from Speed is that the 2013 Chevrolet SS NASCAR Sprint Cup car is set to bow on Thursday, November 29 at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel and casino.  The car will reportedly be shown in full race trim, sans sponsor graphics for Bounty, Skoal or Taylor Swift.

The Vegas debut will mark the introduction of the final vehicle to enter in the 2013 NASCAR season.  Dodge unveiled its Charger racecar in March before leaving the race series.  Toyota showed off its V8, RWD Camry NASCAR in May, while Ford debuted its race-spec Fusion in January of this year.  The remaining entries are expected to (visually) bear a closer resemblance to their road-going counterparts.

While the SS racecar is debuting next month in Vegas, no mention of the production version SS was made.  We are still under the impression that February 21, 2013 will still be the launch date for the road-going version of the rear-wheel drive Holden-based sedan that has GM enthusiasts so worked up.

GM LAWSUIT OVER EINSTEIN IMAGE USE DISMISSED

By Chris Tutor, Autoblog.com - Albert Einstein's image has been used to sell everything from computer software to life insurance.  In 2009, General Motors used the legendary physicist's face in an ad for the 2010 GMC Terrain.  It ran only once in a single issue of People Magazine.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem sued the automaker in 2010, arguing Einstein's will gave the school all rights to the use of his image.  This week, however, a Los Angeles court said those rights expired 55 years after the scientist's death.

"Now, nearly 60 years after his death, that persona should be freely available to those who seek to appropriate it as part of their own expression, even in tastless ads," ruled US District Judge Howard Matz.  "The obviously humorous ad for the 2010 Terrain having been published 55 years or more after Einstein's death, it is unlikely that any viewer of it could reasonably infer that Einstein ... was endorsing the GMC Terrain."

CHEVROLET READIES HOTRODS FOR SEMA

By Jonathan Welsh, Wall Street Journal - Chevrolet is trying to put its best leadfoot forward by showing a range of souped up models at the Specialy Equipment Market Association show, which begins October 30 in Las Vegas.

In addition to the obvious Corvettes and Camaros the General Motors division will idsplay hotrod versions of the Malibu family sedan and even the Spark minicar.

Known as SEMA, the show has grown in the last decade or two from a fringe gathering for aftermarket vendors and car customizers to a highly produced showcase for auto manufacturers who want to attract a younger, edgier audience.

"At Chevrolet, performance comes in many different forms that appeal to many different customers -- and that's exactly what we demonstrate at the SEMA show," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing.

Custom parts for increasing vehicle performance or upgrading their appearance and comfort represent a huge, lucrative market that once was mainly the territory of aftermarket specialty companies.  In recent years, though, car makers have gotten into the act because the parts make it easier to squeeze profit from individual car sales, often over a longer period.

"From Sonic to Cruze, to Camaro, Corvette and Silverado, we offer more parts and accessories than anyone in the aftermarket," said Jim Campbell, GM's U.S. chief of performance vehicles and motorsports.

NEXT-GENERATION CORVETTE TO DEBUT 1.13.13 IN DETROIT

New Crossed Flags logo illustrates the
character of the all-new, "C7" Corvette
By General Motors Corp - Chevrolet today confirmed the seventh-generation Corvette will debut on Sunday evening, January 13, 2013, in Detroit.  To start the countdown to 1.13.13, Chevrolet is showing the new Crossed Flags logo for the new 2014 Corvette.

"The all-new, seventh-generation Corvette deserved an all-new emblem," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design.  "The new Crossed Flags design reflects the character of the next Corvette.  The flags are much more modern, more technical, and more detailed than before -- underscoring the comprehensive redesign of the entire car."

The new Crossed Flags logo was unveiled at Road Atlanta, where Corvette Racing celebrated a sweep of the 2012 production-based American LeMans Series GT championships.

Chevrolet secured the manufacturer's championship; Corvette Racing secured the team championship, and Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner captured the drivers' championship with four wins in the nine races preceding Petit Le Mans, the 2012 ALMS season finale.

These championships make Corvette Racing the most successful team in ALMS history, with a total of 77 class wins, eight drivers' championships, and nine manufacturer and team championships since 2001.  The team has also taken seven class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2001.  Corvette Racing will campaign the C6.R for the 2013 ALMS season.  The C7.R is expected to make its racing debut in 2014.

"Winning the ALMS championships with the Corvette C6.R, against prestigious competitors from Ferrari, Porsche, and BMW is the perfect send-off for the sixth-generation Corvette," said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer.

"The seventh-generation Corvette will build on that success," Juechter continued.  "With the new Corvette, we set out to build a world-challenging sports car with design, refinement, efficiency and driver engagement that is second to one.  The result is a truly all-new Corvette.  There are only two carryover parts from the C6 used in the C7 -- the cabin air filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel."

The Crossed Flags logo has been a hallmark of the Corvete since its 1953 introduction.  It has always incorporated a pair of flags, one a racing checkered flag and other featuring the Chevrolet "bowtie" emblem and a French fleur-de-lis.  The design has evolved over the years, and has been featured on more than 1.5 million Corvettes built between 1953 and today.

For the seventh-generation Corvette, the Crossed Flags design is a more technical, more angular and more swept appearance -- in proportion that symbolizes the new car.  It is also a more detailed representation, showing greater depth, color and attention to detail.

More than 100 variations were considered before the final design was selected.

The new Crossed Flags design will be featured on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, which will debut for credential media on Sunday, Jan 13, 2013 in Detroit.  Chevrolet will offer a limited number of tickets for Corvette enthusiasts, with proceeds benefiting the National Corvette Museum, in Bowling Green, Ky.  Interested parties can contact Roc Linkov (roc@corvettemuseum.com) for more details.

Over coming weeks, more information and video content about the seventh-generation Corvette will be unlocked on www.one13thirteen.com.  Enthusiasts can join the conversation about the next-generation Corvette, as well as keep track of new announcements on Facebook (facebook.com/corvette) and Twitter @Chevrolet(#Corvette).  Fans that follow the #one13thirteen hashtag on Twitter can look forward to exclusive updates.

FAST FACT:  The first Corvette debuted as a concept car on Jan. 17, 1953 at the GM Motorama in New York City.  That car originally featured an emblem with a checkered flag crossed with an American flag.  Because use of the American flag was prohibited as part of a commercial property, the logo was changed to the fleur-de-lis/bowtie design when the Corvette went into production in June 1953.

2013 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE

By Michael Harley, Autoblog.com - The full-size crossover segment is chock-full of many decent players, and for good reason.  The big vehicles deliver most of the off-road and towing capability of a traditional sport utility, the roominess and high driving position of a minivan, and the driving dynamics and fuel economy of a big sedan.  Unfortunately, getting noticed among the growing crowd is a problem.

Chevrolet conquered the dilemma by introducing its 2013 Traverse with a fresh new look (both inside and out), innovative new safety technology, a new ride and some new equipment -- keep in mind that "new" entices buyers into the showrooms.

We recently spent a day with the improved Traverse in San Francisco.  It's a family hauler, with "convenience" as its middle name, so our drive was leisurely and comfortable.  As testing this category of crossovers is more about discovering the annoyances than identifying segment-leading qualities, we found ourselves pleasantly content when it came time to hand back the keys.

The Chevrolet Traverse was first introduced at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show as a 2009 model.  Built on GM's Lambda platform, shared with the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and now-defunct Saturn Outlook, the unibody crossover arrived with one standard V6 engine (yet two slightly different outputs) and a choice between front- and all-wheel drive.  More interesting to most, however, was its seven-passenger cabin with captain's chairs -- it was also available in an eight-passenger bench-row configuration.

Overall, it simply looks more, well ... Chevrolet. For its fifth year of production, Chevrolet has treated its Traverse to a host of improvements.  The front and rear fascias have been redesigned with what the automaker calls "... an athletic new exterior design, including a more expressive front end with a clear Chevrolet character."  More specifically, the resculpted front end features a power dome hood, redesigned grille, new lamps and there are new chrome accents.  Around back, a new license plate pocket and redesigned tail lamps lend a sportier appearance.  Overall, it simply looks more, well ... Chevrolet.

The interior has also gone under the knife.  The dashboard has new upgraded materials, more soft-touch surfaces and teal stitching to richen things up.  New chrome and silver accents, and (optional) blue ambient lighting add some contrast.  The center stack houses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and the climate control system has been redesigned with larger numerals making them easier to read.  Lastly, the frustrating up/down temperature buttons on last year's model have been replaced with much more user-friendly round dials (although they are still digitally controlled).  The primary instrument cluster has a new look, but the slightly dated gauges and leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel are carried over from last year.

Chevrolet is introducing the industry's first center side airbag. With regards to the all-important infotainment suite, Chevrolet has made its MyLink and MyLink with Navigation optional on the 2013 Traverse.  The software (and hardware) integrates with smartphones to allow wireless Bluetooth, Pandora and Stitcher operation through the head unit.

On the safety front, Chevrolet is introducing the world to the industry's first center side airbag -- it inflates between the driver and front passenger to keep the two within their own personal space when things get topsy-turvy (the airbag is stowed on the inboard side of the driver's seat).  The new center side airbag works in conjunction with the seatbelts and the standard front, side and roof-mounted curtain supplemental restraint airbags.  Lastly, the head restraints on the two front seats are now fully articulated, to move up or down and fore and aft, to improve passenger comfort and safety.

The entry-level 2013 Traverse LS FWD starts at $32,885, while the range-topping LTZ AWD costs $48,875.
The powertrain is unchanged, which means all Traverse models are fitted with a direct-injected 3.6-litre V6 with continuously variable valve timing.  With dual exhaust (standard on the higher trim levels), it is rated at 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque (breathing through a single exhaust, output drops slightly to 281 horse4power and 266 pound-feet of torque).  A traditional wet six-speed automatic transmission is standard.  Most Traverse models will be sold with front-wheel drive (FWD), but optional is Chevrolet's Intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD), a system engineered to send torque to the wheels that have the best traction.  Based on FWD technology, it is designed primarily to increase grip in inclement weather and therefore lacks a transfer case or low range.

Trim levels are mostly carried forward from last year.  There are three different models (LS, LT and LTZ) and two LT packages (1LT and 2LT) and powertrains may be mixed and matched.  The entry-level 2013 Traverse LS FWD starts at $32,885, while the range-topping Traverse LTZ AWD costs $48,875.  For our story, we spent time in a loaded LTZ FWD model ($45,875 as-tested).

Despite all the changes, we found the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse drove much like last year's model.  Yet our back seat passenger, a Chevrolet engineer, also reminded us that tweaks had also been made to the suspension.  Rebound springs on the front struts were implemented to help control roll and new shock valving was designed to improve the ride at lower speeds.  We couldn't tell one way or the other whether or not the changes made a difference, but neither roll control nor the low speed ride was an issue.  Overall, the Traverse drives quite well.

Our butt-dyno says the 4,956-pound (2,248 kg) vehicle will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just over eight seconds.
The V6 is a fine powerplant, delivering decent economy with EPA estimates at 13.8L/100km (17 mpg) city, 9.8L/100km (24 mpg) highway in the FWD model and 14.7L/100km (16 mpg) city, 10.2L/100km (23 mpg) for the Traverse AWD.  But, it is showing its age when compared to the torque-rich turbocharged powerplants taking over the industry.  The naturally aspirated six still needs a bit of rpm to deliver its strongest kick, as max torque isn't delivered until 3,400 rpm (for comparison, the turbocharged 2.0-litre in the Ford Explorer delivers the identical torque starting at just 1,750 rpm).  Our butt-dyno says the 4,956-pound (2,248) vehicle will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just over eight seconds, a rate of acceleration that is quick enough to prevent sweating when pulling out in moving traffic.

Ride and handling remain a good mix between massiveness of a body-on-frame Tahoe and the top-heavy front-wheel-drive ponderousness of a minivan (consider that a convoluted backhanded compliment, in favor of the Traverse).  The crossover was completely at ease on the highway, city and canyon cycles as long as all of the speed limits were reasonably obeyed.  Much above that, and as is most often the case with vehicles in this segment, the standard all-season tires were the performance-limiting handicap.

It is more cavernous than a Chevrolet Tahoe when the second and third row are folded flat.
What will get the attention of buyers is the Traverse's family-friendly cabin.  Our test model was configured for seven passengers, with captain's chairs in the second row.  Short of a sliding-door minivan, it is the easiest way to tote a large family as the rear passengers painlessly pass through the break in the second row to jump into the back.  Second row passengers, it should be noted, get their own climate control (making the Traverse a three-zone HVAC vehicle) and the individual chairs have inboard arm rests for additional comfort.

Passengers will also enjoy loading up the Traverse as it swallows cargo like a pelican gulping fish -- and there is hidden storage everywhere.  Running the numbers, when the second and third row are folded flat it is more cavernous (116.4 cubic feet) than a Chevrolet Tahoe.  Even with the second and third row raised for occupants, an easy process with the provided straps, the crossover offers class-leading space in the back (24.4 cubic feet) all accessible through the convenient optional power rear liftgate.

Our biggest gripe with the Traverse has nothing to do with its powertrain, driving dynamics, utility or even the styling -- we didn't like the height of the second- and third-row floor in relation to the seat cushions.  Tall passengers (your author is six-foot two-inches) will occupy the second and third row and find their feet don't rest as low as they do within the average crossover or sedan.  While it is much worse in the third row, in both cases the result is a riding position with knees in an awkward position.  This isn't an issue for a quick around-town jaunt, but it became increasingly uncomfortable the longer we sat back there.  Consider this a warning to all tall adults who don't sit behind the wheel or ride shotgun up front.

Even in light of this one passenger annoyance, we find it easy to recommend the 2013 Traverse to anyone seeking full-size eight-passenger transportation.  Chevrolet's updated and refreshed crossover is the answer to those who want more sport than a minivan, and more car than a truck.  Inking the deal is competitive pricing and an expansive model lineup with powertrain and equipment choices to satisfy just about every family's needs.

CHARGE UP THE CADDY: GM ANNOUNCES PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC CADILLAC

Vehicle is based on concept car
introduced at 2009 Detroit auto show
General Motors introduces its new Cadillac Converj concept vehicle during press days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan in this Jan. 11, 2009 photograph.  The production of the Cadillac ELR, the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle from General Motors Co. is to begin in late 2013 at the same plant that makes the Chevrolet Volt, a top GM official said on Tuesday.

By Edmontonjournal.com - The automaker said Tuesday the Cadillac ELR will be assembled at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant.  That plant makes the Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera and Holden Volt.

The Cadillac will run on electricity and carry a four-cylinder gasoline engine to generate power when the batteries run out of juice.  It's based on the Cadillac Converj, a concept car unveiled in 2009 at the Detroit auto show.

GM North America President Mark Reuss said in a statement that the car is "further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology."

The company will invest $35 million at the plant, which hasn't produced a two-door car since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.

CHEVROLET TRIES TO SPARK CURIOSITY AT NEW YORK COMIC-CON

By Nick Kurczewski, The New York Times - Last weekend, Chevrolet wagered that the Boba Fetts wandering New York Comic-Con would need a new set of wheels, if only for those times when the jet packs of the "Star Wars" bounty hunters were in the shop.

The automaker made its second official appearance at the annual convention for comic art and pop culture, which welcomed tens of thousands to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from Thursday to Sunday.

The Chevrolet stand, in the middle of the main show floor, included a Transformers Edition Camaro painted bright yellow with black racing stripes.  Lest attendees miss the eye-searing paint job, adjacent to the Camaro was a gentleman dressed as Bumblebee, the Transformers character who assumed the shape of the Camaro in his automotive form.

"It's less of a Camaro and more of a prop from a movie," Bill Fleck, Chevrolet's regional marketing manager for the Northeast, said of the vehicle.  He said New York Comic-Con allowed Chevrolet to "insert itself into something cool and relevant" and showcase vehicles that many attendees could actually buy.

As it did at the Maker Faire in Queens two weeks earlier, Chevrolet opted to train eyeballs on the Spark minicar rather than more "aspirational vehicles", according to Mr. Bleck, like the Camaro and Corvette -- however more suited that twosome may be to the rippling physiques of the comic realm.  The tiny Spark, the smallest vehicle ever marketed by Chevrolet in the United States, could be construed as Clark Kent to the Camaro's Superman, powered by an 84-horsepower in-line-4 engine instead of a supercharged V-8.

On Saturday and Sunday, the automaker offered ride-alongs in the Spark.

Chevrolet invited the I.D.W., Dark Horse, Image and Boom!  Studios comic imprints to design vinyl wraps for the four Sparks on display.  Aside from distributing free T-shirts, Chevrolet also provided Comic-Con attendees with plastic swipe cards, which could be validated in front of the four Sparks to qualify for a grand prize drawing, in which the winner would go home in one of the Sparks.

"I'm never against free things," said Christian Siems, a student in Long Island, after swiping his card.

Stephen Martin, a spokesman for General Motors, wrote in an e-mail that the eventual winner initially wanted the Spark wrapped by Boom! Studios, featuring characters from the comic series "Adventure Time" and "Bravest Warriors" by Pendleton Ward, but after he learned it had a manual transmission he said he may elect an unwrapped one instead.

A flat-white Spark could also be found parked in the middle of Artist Alley, a section of Comic-Con devoted to artists displaying and selling original work.  In the middle of North Hall, the four-wheel blank canvas had a rolling rotation of comic artists drawing directly onto predetermined sections of the car.

Matthew Clark, an artist in Portland, Oregon, who has rendered characters like Marvel's Ghost Rider, was assigned the rear lift gate.  "It's a zombie horror motif," said Mr. Clark, who admitted his original plan had been built around an idea for the driver's side door, in which "someone would be driving over a zombie".  The late change required a modification to the design, though Mr. Clark said the rear taillight allowed him to use the red reflective lens for his drawing of "half a skull with an eyeball popping out."

HSV TESTING SUPERCHARGED V8 ... COULD CHEVY SS PERFORMANCE MODEL GET CAMARO ZL1 POWER?

By Jeremy Korzeniewski, Autoblog.com - Chevrolet isn't hiding the fact that a new rear-wheel-drive performance sedan -- called the SS and seen in full checkered-flag regalia above -- is on its way to North American shores, courtesy of GM's Australian division.  Past its eventual existence, though, we've been kept in the dark.  How much will the SS cost?  Who, exactly, will it be marketed to?  And, perhaps most importantly, what will power the 2014 Chevy SS?

As we all know, General Motors has a cornucopia of engine choices at its disposal, from standard four-cylinder engines to turbocharged four- and six-cylinder units and, of course, the classic V8.  Not surprisingly, it's the upper-end of the V8 spectrum we're most curious about.  According to the Aussie scribes at GoAuto.com, the SS may be getting the same rockin' and rollin' supercharged mill that so ably (over)powers the Camaro ZL1.  Yes, please.

Backing up GoAuto's assertion are some engineering mules being tested by Holden that reportedly have the tell-tale whine of a supercharger underhood.  Considering that both the SS and Camaro will be sharing the same basic Zeta underpinnings, the addition of the stupid-powerful V8 seems distinctly possible.  Let's hope.

CHEVY AND ISAAC MIZRAHI HOPE THAT WHEN YOU THINK OF HIGH FASHION, YOU THINK OF MALIBU

By Jonathon Ramsey, Autoblog.com - Isaac Mizrahi's clothing collection "inspired by the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu" will hit the LivingSocial Shop in less than a week.  Pitching the Malibu to women, Chevrolet announced in August that the fashion designer would create a line with cues taken not just from the Malibu, but also from the kinds of women who "embody the persona of the new car."

The six-piece "capsule collection" is therefore a mix of the "ice-blue ambient lighting", "leather seats", "crisp lines" and the "smart, stylish woman who likes nice things".  The Malibu Collection is a blouse, skinny jean, leather jacket, driving moccasin, tote bag and "oversized boyfriend watch".

The curtain goes up on LivingSocial on October 16.

MEET DICK EYTCHISON AND HIS '65 CHEVELLE AUTOCROSSER

By Zach Bowman, Autoblog.com - There are a few things we love more than seeing well-sorted classic cars being put to task.  It seems we're in good company on that front.  Dick Eytchison shares our belief that, 'you just don't appreciate them unless you get out there and drive them."

Over the years, Dick has whipped his 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle sedan into an autocross terror.  With a breathed-on 383 crate V8 spitting out around 400 horsepower, the Chevelle has no deficit of grunt.  Of course, getting a mid-sixties muscle bruiser to spring in a straight line has never been an issue; it's getting the machine to go right and left that's the challenge.

The 68-year-old weekend racer ditched the factory rear end for a stout Ford nine-inch with a Truetrac limited slip, and a set of Baer brakes on all four corners bring the machine down from speed.  Up front, 13-inch rotors get pressed by four-piston calipers, while the back axle makes due with a couple of 12-inch discs.

A full suite of Hotchkis goodies, including A-arms, sway bars and spindles, help keep the machine planted, as do Bilstein shocks on all four corners.  The finished product looks right at home dodging cones.  We dig it.

CHEVROLET MALIBU, PONTIAC G6, SATURN AURA RECALLED

By Stephen Elmer, Autoblog.com - A recall has been issued today for model Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles built between 2008 and 2010, as well as Saturn Auras built from 2007 to 2010 because of a transmission flaw.

About 40,029 vehicles are affected by the recall which has only been reported in Canada so far, although it will surely spread to the U.S. soon.  When NHTSA announces it, expect the number of vehicles affected to be much higher as well.

The problem affects automatic transmission vehicles where shift cable locking tabs can fracture, causing the shift lever to show an incorrect gear than what the vehicle is actually in.  This means that the driver can place the shift lever in park, but the vehicles transmission may not follow suit, which could lead to the car rolling away once the driver has exited.  Because the car doesn't know when it is in park, it will not automatically lock the doors, and it may be incapable of restarting.

Dealers will replace the cable, and/or the cable clips free of charge to the consumer.

UPDATE:  The recall has now expanded to the States according to NHTSA, where it affects 426,240 vehicles in total.

FORD, GM WIN BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCT AWARDS FROM POPULAR MECHANICS

By Autoblog.com - Tucked between an avalanche airbag and a 3D desktop printer, a Ford engine and General Motors' crash avoidance system were named two of Popular Mechanics top breakthrough technology award winners for 2012.

Ford's three-cylinder 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine collected one of Pop Mech's honors by providing power through turbocharging and fuel efficiency through its tiny displacement.  While the internal combustion engine has been around for more than 100 years, it's not often that it undergoes such a dramatic improvement.

"We placed the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine," said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain, in a news release.  "We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement -- and all from a very small three-cylinder engine.

GM's crash avoidance system is a big step toward creating self-driving cars.  The system, which debuted in the GMC Terrain, uses a camera mounted near the rearview mirror.  It follows the lines on the road to ensure the Terrain stays between them and can detect objects that might be in the way.

While many carmakers are introducing similar systems, Popular Mechanics notes that GM's is "the first practical and cost-effective single-camera vision system for crash avoidance in passenger cars."

GM PLANS TO HIRE 10,000 COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS

General Motors will hire 1,500 computer
software developers in Detroit alone
By The Associated Press - Now hiring in Detroit: Software developers and programmers.

General Motors is moving past layoffs and the Motor City's rusty, low-tech image.  It's setting out on its own to develop software and invent the most advanced gizmos for your car.

America's biggest automaker plans to hire up to 10,000 computer professionals in the next three-to-five years as it tries to lead the auto industry with cutting-edge technology.

It's a bold and expensive move, counter to the industry's history of buying software and other electronic applications from outside companies.  Experts say it's also the start of a trend as manufacturers realize that software is among the few things that will set them apart from competitors.

'Companies that build software ... have an advantage.' - David Kirkpatrick, tech expert
"The companies that build the software themselves in general are going to have an advantage," says David Kirkpatrick, author of a book about Facebook and CEO of Techonomy Media Inc., a New York firm that specializes in setting up technology conferences.  "If you outsource the development of software in particular to others, you can risk ... your own ability to compete in the future."

General Motors Co. isn't alone in trying to move more technology development under its roof.  But the plans of its biggest competitor, Ford Motor Co., aren't nearly as ambitious.

GM aims to bring 90 per cent of its computer technology work into the company by recruiting workers to four new information technology centres around the nation.  Ford recently joined GM, BMW AG and Renault-Nissan in opening a technology office in California's Silicon Valley, although it's staffed by only about 15 people.

GM's first "Information Technology Innovation Center" was announced last month in Austin, Texas, with plans to hire 500 programmers and software experts.  And Monday the carmaker unveiled plans to hire 1,500 more at a second computer centre in Warren, Mich., on the campus of its big tech centre.  GM already has product designers, engineers and other technical experts at the site, including the team that created the Chevrolet Volt electric car.

The other two sites haven't been revealed.

Staff at the centres will try to stay on top of software trends.  They'll develop the latest ways to link smartphones with cars or control a vehicle's heating and air conditioning with voice commands.  They'll also be counted on to invent technology that no one's thought of yet.  And GM also sees long-term cost savings when the centres are fully in operation.

"We're currently seeking the next generation of game-changes to help us usher in a new age of automotive innovation," says GM Chief Information Office Randy Mott, who was Hewlett-Packard's CIO until he joined GM in February.

Although there are shortages of programmers and software engineers in some parts of the country, GM should be able to recruit enough talent by setting up shop in four different regions, experts say.  With the tech-hub of Austin and GM's home base in Detroit already covered, the most likely locations for the next two centres are on the West Coast, experts say.

GM says it will offer competitive wages and benefits to pull in recent college graduates and experienced information technology professionals.  The company's iconic brand status will help attract people, experts say.

High-paying, white collar jobs
But offering competitive pay will cost GM.  Software engineers make $60,000 to $70,000 a year right out of college, and experienced workers can make more, says James Stoeckmann, senior compensation specialist for World at Work, an organization of human resources executives who deal with pay issues.

Expensive or not, the strategy is correct for GM as it tries to differentiate its products from other automakers, says Michael Robinet, managing director of IHS Automotive, an industry consulting firm.  With the gap in quality between brands shrinking, the way a car drives and its electronics soon will be the only things that set a company apart, he says.

Currently, GM and most automakers rely on outside companies for touch screen and other technology.  But often those companies sell the technology to multiple carmakers, or new software is sold in an expensive bidding war, Robinet says.

"If they have their own skunk works and they find a new technology, they are guaranteed to bring it to market first," he says.

Ford, for instance, worked with Microsoft Inc. on its pioneering Sync system, which brought voice activation technology into cars ahead of most competitors.  But Ford only had exclusive use of the system for a year before Microsoft was able to license it to other companies, namely Hyundai and Kia.

Outside companies have so much expertise that it will take years for GM to catch up, making it unlikely that the company will completely walk away from outside firms, Robinet says.

Yet with software gaining so much importance in the way all companies operate, it's even possible that GM will find its next generation of leaders somewhere in the computer centres, says Kirkpatrick.

"CEOs of every company in the future are going to have to be software thinkers," he says.

GM CROSSOVER MAKING TRAX

GM feels the B-segment Trax as an
unlikely fit in the States, but will cater to Canucks.
By Glen Woodcock, Autonet - One of the worst kept secrets in advance of the Paris Motor Show was that it would be the venue for the launch of the 2013 Chevrolet Trax -- a combination of city car and small crossover utility vehicle.

Trax was the subject of much internet buzz -- much of it created by General Motors -- long before the wraps came off on the Paris show floor.

As previously announced, Trax will be a worldwide brand for Chevrolet -- but not in the United States.  The sub-compact crossover will go on sale in Canada and Mexico later this year, but right now there are no plans to market it to Americans.

That, of course, could change if petroleum prices continue to rise unchecked.

The Trax unveiled in Paris was decked out in Manchester United colours and logos -- a not-so-subtle reminder that Chevrolet has now become a major sponsor of the English soccer team with its faithful worldwide following.

Chevrolet's first B-segment crossover will be powered by several engines around the world, but only by a turbocharged 1.4-litre gasoline engine in the Canadian market.  That's the same inline-four that powers the Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze and the new Buick Encore, making 138 hp at 4,900 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 1,850 rpm.  A six-speed manual is standard and a six-speed automatic will be available.

The five-passenger Trax is built in Korea on the Sonic platform.  Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive optional for Trax, which GM says has "the flexibility of a small car, perfect for the city, with the practicality of an SUV that's versatile enough for the cottage."

Fuel economy in all-wheel drive is rated at 8.1L/100 knm city and 5.9L/100 km highway using regular gas.

WORLD PREMIERE FOR CHEVROLET TRAX IN PARIS

  • Chevrolet Trax boasts true SUV looks and character
  • Powerful and efficient powertrain combination
  • 1.4L turbo engine mated to a 6-speed transmission (manual or available automatic)
  • On-demand all-wheel-drive system to tackle Canada's diverse weather and rugged terrain
  • Smartphone app to enable available MyLink-projected navigation
By General Motors - The all-new Chevrolet Trax celebrates its world premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, representing Chevrolet's first entry to the fast-growing small SUV segment.  Trax will round out Chevrolet's offering of stylish crossovers and SUVs in Canadian Chevy showrooms alongside the popular Orlando, Equinox and Traverse.

"Building on Chevrolet's long tradition of offering dependable and capable SUVs and crossovers, Trax delivers modern styling, versatility and efficiency, while offering car-like handling and all-wheel drive," said Marc Comeau, vice-president of sales, service and marketing for Chevrolet in Canada.  "Trax will be a popular choice with Canadians looking for the styling, functionality and cargo space expected of a much larger vehicle, but in a smaller sporty package."

Athletic stance, powerful body linesMeasuring 4,248 mm in length, 1,776 mm in width and 1,674 mm in height, Chevrolet's new small SUV will energize the segment with its inspired styling, efficient yet powerful powertrain and sporty, responsive ride characteristics.

From all angles, Trax conveys athletic agility and movement.  With the Chevy bowtie spearating the upper from the lower port of its prominent front grille, the small SUV can immediately be identified as a member of the Chevrolet family.  The subtle centreline crease on the hood surface and the detailed halogen headlamps add to the vehicle's dynamic appearance.

While the Trax exterior is characterized by powerful body lines and a planted stance, engineers and designers have made sure the SUV is also aerodynamically refined.  Its rearward swept roofline, a fascia-mounted air dam and an integrated roof spoiler contribute to the vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency.  Wheel offerings are 16 or 18-inches in size.

Fuel-efficient 1.4L turbocharged engine and available on-demand AWD system
With sufficient space to accommodate five persons in a comfortable high seating position, Trax will deliver car-like handling while also enabling true off-road capability when needed.

In Canda, Trax features a 1.4L turbocharged engine producing 138hp (103 kW) and 148 lb.ft. of torque.  A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the LS model, and the LT and LTZ models receive a 6-speed automatic transmission.

An AWD system, available on LT and LTZ models, automatically adapts to road conditions and significantly improves traction on slippery or graveled roads.

Rock-solid safety
An array of passive and active safety systems ensures that unexpected developments result in as little damage to the car's occupants as possible.  Apart from a unibody structure consisting of high-strength steels, Trax will boast six standard airbags, a releasable pedal assembly and three-point seatbelts on all seats.

Trax comes loaded with standard safety features, including: StabiliTrak (Electronic Stability Control) including hill start assist (HSA), panic brake assist, traction control (TC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution and OnStar.

Unique storage flexibility and connectivity
Inside, Trax delivers clean sophistication that is complemented by useful convenience features such as a cluster combining digital readouts with analog displays.  Chevrolet ice blue backlighting is incorporated on control interfaces as well as the instrument cluster.

Storage amenities in the new Trax are plentiful.  They include various compartments above and on both sides of the centre stack as well as an available under-seat storage tray.  The Trax cargo area can accommodate a maximum of 1370L (rear seats down); further space can be made available under the cargo floor.

In addition to a 60/40 split rear seat, Trax boasts a front passenger seat that can be folded flat, offering additional flexibility for longer items.  Up to a total of eight seating combinations and configurations are possible.

2LT and LTZ trim levels will feature Chevrolet MyLink as standard.  Chevrolet MyLink is an infotainment system that aggregates content from smartphones onto the seven-inch, high resolution, full-colour touchscreen display.  A dedicated navigation app called Bringo (by Engis) will become available early next year.  It will project the route map from the smartphone onto the system's touch-screen.

With Chevrolet MyLink, phone calls can be conveniently placed by selecting a name from a stored directory and then touching the call function.  The system provides easy access to personal playlists, photo galleries, phone books, other stored media and data.  As long as the car remains stationary, occupants may also view videos or personalized slide shows.  A rearview camera is part of the MyLink infotainment package and provides assistance during parking maneuvers.

Intuitive navigation with smartphone app
The Bringo navigation app (by Engis) will be offered through online app stores, for download onto compatible smartphones (both IOS and Android).  Its use is as straightforward as that of any integrated navigation system.  Once the driver has connected the smarthphone to Chevrolet MyLink and tapped the navigation icon, the main menu will appear on the seven-inch full color touchscreen.  It offers a selection of easy-to-navigate submenus.

The smartphone app features Lane guidance which will help drivers by displaying the correct lane(s) to stay in.  Live traffic can provide real-time traffic information, such as detailed incident reports and the ability to reroute to avoid traffic jams.  The traffic service requires an active network connection through the smartphone.

An eco icon at the bottom of the Bringo main menu will enable drivers to review their driving efficiency.  An average and minimum eco-driving efficiency rating can be calculated for the past day, week or month.

GM RECALLING OVER 40,000 CHEVY, PONTIAC AND SATURN MODELS OVER FUEL PUMP WOES

By Jeffrey Ross, Autoblog.com - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for a number of General Motors cars and crossovers bought or currently registered in the hot-climate states of Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.  As many as 40,859 units consisting of the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent and Saturn Ion and the 2007-2009 Chevrolet Cobalt (shown) and its Pontiac G5 twin are being recalled for potential fuel leaks.

This recall is being issued due to potentially faulty fuel pump components that can crack and cause gasoline to leak from the return or supply ports and possibly cause a fire.  NHTSA has not indicated how many fuel leaks or vehicle fires have been reported.  As a fix, GM will replace the fuel pump modules on all affected vehicles free of charge.  Since Pontiac and Saturn has been shuttered, owners will be able to go to another GM-brand dealership to have their vehicles repaired.

2013 CHEVROLET SPARK SALES ARE OFF THE CHARTS

By Matt Mercuro, Autoworldnews.com - General Motors has only released the Chevrolet Spark in 18 metropolitan markets so far, but due to a drastic increase in sales and demand for the vehicle, it will now be released nationwide by 2013.

GM sold 4,090 Sparks in July and August, when its total surpassed those of its two chief competitors, the Scion iQ and Smart ForTwo.  While the Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper are comparable in size, GM doesn't think of them as direct competitors because their sticker prices are much greater than the Spark's base price of $12,995.  The 18 metropolitan markets, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, have been selling the Spark at an alarming rate, causing dealerships to completely sell out as soon as new stock comes in.

"The minicar segment in the U.S. is hard to forecast, so we've been conservative in how many we bring out," says Cristi Landy, marketing director for Chevrolet small cars in a statement on the company's site.  "Dealers are already asking for more.  So far, it's been a good problem to have."

The Spark is attractive to interested buyers thanks to the content and features not found on its rivals, such as four doors and more rear-seat space.  The 1LT trim level, which costs $14,495, features Chevy's new MyLink infotainment system with Bluetooth and navigation via a $50 smartphone app that displays maps on the 7-inch touch screen.

IHS Automotive predicts that Chevy will sell 27,000 units of the Spark in 2013, the car's first full year on the U.S. market.  Based on its sales from the limited rollout so far, GM is currently on track to surpass that total.  Dealers attribute the demand for the car due largely in part to its appeal to budget-minded buyers amid near-record prices for used cars.

Buyers have been a mix of college kids, moms, and seniors some of whom were not GM customers before.  Approximately 54 percent of buyers were not customers before buying the Spark, which is the highest number of new customers for any Chevy car currently.  Many of them were persuaded to purchase the new car thanks to the 100,000-mile powertrain warranty for under $13,000.

2013 CHEVROLET CORVETTE GRAND SPORT COUPE

By Michael Harley, Autoblog.com - After ripping around in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 supercar and enjoying every tire-shredding moment, we were worried that the Corvette Grand Sport Coupe, its lesser sibling, would be a letdown.  We were very wrong.  Chevrolet has made sure its Corvette Grand Sport deliberately lacks the supercharger and bad-boy displacement of its big brothers, but its masterfully-tuned 6.2-litre V8 is nothing to laugh at, boasting 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque.
  • Power is more than abundant, and the soundtrack sent chills down our hardened spines (for best results, remove the exhaust flapper fuse like we did)
  • Thanks to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (a6AT is optional) and a limited-slip differential, this two-door will blast to 60 mph (96 km/h) in about four seconds flat.  Top speed is fast enough to lift a commercial jetliner off the ground
  • Our coupe, a 4LT model, arrived decked out in Arctic White paint with 60th Anniversary Design and 60th Anniversary Stripe packages.  Some may consider the packages a bit gaudy, but it garnered more than a few compliments from passer-bys.
  • The Corvette's cabin might be woefully dated, but our car's diamond-blue leather upholstery helped this C6's cabin look about as good as we've ever seen it
  • Taming a big American V8 isn't easy, but Chevrolet has done an excellent job.  Upgraded with GM's Active Handling, unique body components and a higher, wider rear spoiler, our car also featured the Z52 Performance Package (bundled with a track-ready dry-sump oil system, differential cooler, sticky Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires and larger cross-drilled brakes)
  • While the Grand Sport starts at $67,605, our as-tested price, including the must-have Magnetic Selective Ride Control (magnetorheological shocks) and some other options, was about $73,150
  • Despite being down a couple of hundred horsepower, we found the Grand Sport Coupe slightly more enjoyable than the ZR1 on public roads -- its power is simply more useable.  We could more easily put our foot to the floor coming out of the corners without worrying about kissing a guardrail or an immobile tree.  The steering is razor-sharp, and the brakes and suspension were easily up to everything we could throw at them

FORD, GM CO-DESIGN TRANNIES

By Mike Colias and Bradford Wernie, Automotivenews.com - General Motors and Ford Motor Co. are jointly designing nine- and 10-speed automatic transmissions for broad use across their vehicle lineups in a bid to boost fuel economy.

GM is leading the design of a nine-speed gearbox for use in front-wheel-drive vehicles, said three people familiar with the companies' plans.

Ford is taking the lead on a 10-speed transmission, which would be used in rear-wheel-drive vehicles such as pickups, SUVs and performance cars, the sources said.

The companies began working on the transmission program early this year, one source said.  They still are in the design phase and likely won't be ready for production before 2015, one source said.

A GM spokesman confirmed that the two companies "are in discussions" and have signed a memorandum of understanding "to jointly develop a variety of all-new, fuel-efficient transmissions."  He would not discuss details and said the companies "hope to announce a definitive agreement soon."

A Ford spokesman said: "We always talk to other companies, including GM."  He declined to elaborate.

The New York Times reported that Ford and GM plan to jointly develop automatics and are considering a manufacturing alliance.

GM and Ford are playing catchup as other automakers hit the market with gearboxes ranging from seven to nine speeds.

Chrysler, via a joint venture with ZF Friedrichshafen, offers an eight-speed automatic on its 300 sedan and the 2013 Ram pickup.  In 2013 Chrysler will offer a ZF-built nine-speed fwd transmission for small and mid-sized vehicles.

Audi, BMW and Lexus all offer eight-speeds, while Mercedes Benz offers a seven-speed.

Mike Omotoso, powertrain analyst for LMC Automotive, says the main benefits of adding more gears are fuel economy and refinement.

"The engine has to do less work, so they aren't revving as much as they used to with fewer forward gears," he said.

The partnership extends a transmission pact that dates to 2002, when Ford and GM agreed to work together on a family of six-speed automatics for fwd vehicles.  The transmissions, including the Ford 6F-35 and GM 6T70, have been installed in millions in vehicles, including the Ford Fusion and Escape and the Chevrolet Malibu.

Ford and GM each appear to be altering plans for eight-speed transmissions with an eye toward the greater savings that could come from more gears, one of the sources said.

In June 2011, Ford announced plans for its own eight-speed automatic, but the company did not specify an application.  The company has said little about the transmission since then.  Some new outlets reported it was designed for the F-150 pickup.

One of the sources with knowledge of its plans says Ford scrapped a homegrown eight-speed transmission program within the past year, before it began working with GM.

Last year, GM CEO Dan Akerson said that GM would spend $204 million to equip its Toledo, Ohio, powertrain plant to build a homegrown eight-speed gearbox.  He wouldn't say what vehicles it would go into or when it would reach production.

Two sources said that that transmission is on track for a mid-2014 launch and probably would go into at least one Cadillac, likely the CTS sedan, and eventually GM's pickups and SUVs.  One of the sources said that GM has reduced the volume projections for the eight-speed.

The person said:  "That rear-drive eight-speed is likely to be very, very low volume now."
